Port of Newcastle and MHI Announce Clean Energy Partnerships

Port of Newcastle and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. has unveiled, during a visit by Mr Chris Bowen, Minister for Climate Change and Energy, to the Port today, an MOU setting out a pathway towards the enablement of a world-class clean energy economy in the Hunter Region through the Port’s Clean Energy Precinct, which secured a $100-million Commonwealth funding grant in the 2022 Federal Budget. Japan, Australia to tie up on hydrogen supply for zero emissions Asia

Japan announced the launch of a hydrogen supply chain with Australia as the two countries and Southeast Asian nations gathered for their first ministerial meeting on the reduction of carbon emissions in the fast-growing region. In a video message for the meeting on the Asia Zero Emission Community framework, an initiative proposed by Japan, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said he would like to expand hydrogen supply chain networks throughout the region by cooperating further with Asian nations. “In Asia, we should hold as many energy options as possible, and hydrogen and ammonia are options,” he said, underscoring hydrogen could be a valuable source of energy in making clean energy transitions, especially in a region prone to natural disasters. Carbon Capture in the Steel Industry: ArcelorMittal, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Engineering, BHP and Mitsubishi Development Sign Collaboration Agreement

ArcelorMittal, the world’s leading global steel and mining company, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Engineering (MHIENG), a pioneer in carbon capture technology, leading global resources company, BHP, along with Mitsubishi Development Pty Ltd are collaborating on a multi-year trial of MHIENG’s carbon capture technology with ArcelorMittal, following the signing of a funding agreement between the parties. The companies will also conduct a feasibility and design study to support progress to full scale deployment. The agreement, which involves a trial at ArcelorMittal’s steel plant in Gent, Belgium and another site in North America, brings together the expertise of the various partners in identifying ways to enhance carbon capture and utilization and/or storage (CCUS) technologies in the hard-to-abate steelmaking industry.
