Mitsubishi Power Receives Order of Two Gas Turbines For the Hunter Power Project in Australia

Mitsubishi Power, a power solutions brand of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) has received an order from Snowy Hydro Limited, a dynamic, integrated energy business, for two M701F gas turbines and related auxiliaries equipment for the Hunter Power Project in New South Wales, the southeastern region of Australia. The total power output of the plant will be 660MW and commercial operations are set to begin in 2023. From the standpoint of reducing CO2 emissions, the plant has a potential for up to 15% hydrogen co-firing. The power plant is located in Hunter Valley, approximately 120km north of Sydney. The project is intended to secure an alternative cleaner power supply following the scheduled shutdown of a large-scale coal-fired power plant in Australia, as well as providing the necessary dispatchable ‘firmed’ energy, ensuring security and stability to support the volatility that arises from intermittent renewables. Mitsubishi Power will supply the M701F gas turbines,…

MHI Group and Applus+ IDIADA to Develop Testing and Verification System for Highly Automated Vehicles

Three MHI Group companies have concluded an agreement with Applus+ IDIADA (IDIADA), a Spain-based multinational company that performs engineering, testing and homologation for the automotive industry, on joint development of a testing and verification system for highly automated vehicles. IDIADA has an abundant track record in vehicle development, testing and homologation for automakers in Europe, and is contributing to the formulation of international standards in these areas. Today, development of automated driving systems is vigorously underway worldwide, and in the years ahead, dramatic capability improvements and increasing adoption of such systems are anticipated. To ensure their safe and secure operation, it must be verified that sensors and systems will function normally under the diverse natural environments that highly automated vehicles will encounter; moreover, needs are expected to increase in the coming years for testing under all possible weather conditions. In response, three MHI Group companies and IDIADA will jointly develop…

MHI and Primetals Technologies Join Heavy Industry Low-Carbon Transition Cooperative Research Centre

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) Australia and Primetals Technologies, a member of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) Group, have joined Australia’s Heavy Industry Low-Carbon Transition Cooperative Research Centre (HILT CRC) as key partners. The Centre, a not-for-profit entity with significant government funding, aims to develop technologies to decarbonize Australia’s heavy industrial sector, leverage the country’s natural endowments in mineral and clean energy resources and seize the opportunity of growing export markets for certified low-carbon products. Over the next 10 years, Primetals Technologies and MHI Australia will be contributing financially as well as with their decades-long experience in iron and steel production to this effort. The companies will focus on research and development of hydrogen-based direct reduction of iron ore. This includes the novel HYFOR (hydrogen-based fine-ore reduction) technology currently being piloted by Primetals Technologies in Europe. Australia has the world’s largest iron ore deposits and is the leading exporter of iron ore.…

Effect of Cool Airflow On Comfort: More Than Just A Feeling

Effect of cool airflow on comfort more than just a feeling study uses both subjective and physiological measurements to show the influence of cooling airflow direction on comfort could improving comfort and productivity be as simple as changing the direction of your air conditioner vents during the summer?  Using a series of physiological measurements, a new study from researchers at Kyushu University provides new experimental evidence that this just might be the case. The flow of air in a room is known to influence comfort, but evaluations have so far been primarily based on assessments of feelings that are subjective, which can lead to discrepancies,” explains Tsuyoshi Okamoto, associate professor at Kyushu University’s Faculty of Arts and Science and leader of the new study in PLOS ONE. “In our study, we combined subjective assessments with physiological measurements of things such as heart rate and brain activity to obtain a more…

MHI’s Spirit of Monozukuri

The spirit of Monozukuri sits at the heart of the Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) Group and is evident through the ideation and commitment to research, developing and producing innovative products. It’s a philosophy adopted across all MHI business globally and is apparent in Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Air-Conditioners Australia, Pty. Ltd’s (MHIAA) dedication in supplying award winning air conditioning products to the Australian and New Zealand market. The art of Monozukuri originated in Japan as far back as 2000BC. Whilst Monozukuri is rooted in the art of manufacturing, in contemporary times the idea heavily influences science and engineering, fueling scientific and technological innovation. Today, Monozukuri in Japan is the driving principle that drives design innovation that conforms the output of any successful manufacturing companies. Monozukuri is a compound word; mono, meaning product, item, or thing, and zukuri, which is the process of making. It is both a concept and a mindset…
