Why Heat Pumps Can Still Be Useful In Summer
Not everyone in New Zealand will need a heat pump all year round. We get it. That’s the nature of Aotearoa/New Zealand and the differing climates between regions and differing needs of households.
However, much like habitants in other parts of the world which are usually only known to use heat pumps during colder months, more Kiwi’s are choosing to use their heat pumps during summer months.
We take a closer look at exactly why we think that is and why heat pumps can still be helpful during summer.
They Help Keep You Cool
While you might this it is obvious, this is sometimes an overlooked fact. Especially given the ‘heat pump’ name.
Almost all heat pumps sold in New Zealand today (including all Mitsubishi Heavy Industries models) are reverse cycle. This means they’re able to both heat and cool your home making them perfect for all year round use.
They Help Reduce Humidity
As well as cooling your space, heat pumps also help remove moisture from the air. This happens when used in cooling mode but heat pumps also have a specific ‘Dry Mode’. This allows the unit to remove moisture while not affecting the temperature of your space and using much less energy.
They Help Prevent Mould
Staying on the humidity theme, split systems also help to remove and prevent mould – a known issue amongst many homes within New Zealand. Fans within Mitsubishi Heavy Industries split systems have undergone a specialised anti-microbial treatment. This helps inhibits the growth of odour causing mould and microbes.
On top of this, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries heat pumps also have Self Cleaning operation which is designed to dry the internal components, including fan and filters. This helps to further eliminate mould and helps deliver clean air – even on those humid days!
They Help Improve Indoor Air Quality
As well as removing mould, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries heat pumps include ‘Clean Air Technology’ which work to help improve overall indoor air quality in your home.
‘Clean Air Technology’, which incorporates specialised several filters, functions and features which work together to capture and neutralises allergens and other fine particles, deactivate bacteria and viruses and neutralise odour causing molecules.
This helps keep the air in your home fresh!
They’re Cheap To Run
While electricity costs have definitely increased over the last few years, when used in moderation and in combination with a few of our energy saving tips, heat pumps can still be very cheap to run. This is thanks to their 300-400% efficiency.
Heat pumps on average cost between 9c – 25c per hour to run. This is compared to a other appliances such as clothes dryers, ovens and cooktops which range between 35c – $2.22 per hour to run. You can refer to our other blog post here to learn more about heat pump running costs.
